Okay,
this is fannish and silly, but it gives me
pleasure and maybe you'll think it's fun too. As
I've gotten to see more and more anime, I've
realised that visually, Yuuichirou belongs to a
definite character type. I keep seeing guys who
look a bit like him! Here, then, are a few of them.
I guess this will also tell you something about my
viewing tastes.
Just
a note: it's been brought to my attention that in
the episode known in North America as Cherry
Blossom Time (I'm not sure of the Japanese
title, but it's from the 'filler' first half of the
R season; it's also interesting because I think
this is the first time Sailormoon's fuku is shown
dissolving into pink ribbons radiating from her
brooch) uh, to get back to my original sentence, in
that episode, during a panning shot of the park
where everyone's enjoying picnics under the
blossoming cherry trees, we see a couple with a
little boy who some people think look like older
versions of Yuuichirou and Rei. I've watched the
episode in question carefully (with freeze-frame,
even) and my conclusion is that, although the guy
has shaggy hair and whiskers like Yuuichirou, the
fact that he also has thick glasses and is quite
fat prevents him being a real lookalike. He looks
more like a Yuuichirou-Umino hybrid - now there's a
weird thought *^.^* Thanks, though, to
Jupiter264,
who emailed me to suggest its inclusion. There's
also a note about it somewhere at Castle
in the Sky - Sailor
Moon.

Natsume
Kyusaku
From
the OAV Bannou Bunka Nekomusume
(also known as All Purpose Cultural
Cat Girl Nuku Nuku). This is a
gloriously silly and hugely endearing
anime about, well, it'd be hard to
summarise succinctly, but a major part of
it is that a brilliant but eccentric
roboticist builds a rather cute android
(Nuku Nuku) incorporating the brain of an
alleycat adopted by his young son,
Ryunosuke, but accidentally killed. Acute
observers will detect a lack of
chin-bristles but a distinct resemblance
in the hairy region. Kyusaku is a little
detached from what the rest of us consider
reality; he'll stay up for several days
and nights straight when the muse of
invention is with him, to the point where
he'll find it hard to recognise people he
knows quite well. His relationship with
his estranged wife Akiko... well, let's
just say there used to be a website
dedicated to it called Isn't It Psychotic?
However, Kyusaku is a good dad to Ryuu,
and of course Nuku Nuku loves her
Papa-san. He's an extremely funny and
likeable character - hey, sounds familiar.
Although he looks about twelve in this
picture, he's meant to be in his thirties.

Nuku Punch!

Dryden
Fassa
One
of the many fascinating secondary
characters in the
wonderful-beautiful-faboo anime series
Tenkuu no Escaflowne, or The
Vision of Escaflowne. (I like his
little glasses - and yes, we have
bristlage!) See the
Escaflowne
Compendium
for more on what I think may be my
favourite anime of all - yes, even better
than Sailormoon! To learn
more about Dryden, visit my shrine for
him, Merchant
Prince.
(I have a lot more to say about him than I
can fit here. You think I'm obsessed with
Yuuichirou? You should see me with my
Escaboys.)

Kaji
Ryouji
A
character from Neon Genesis
Evangelion, one of the most popular
anime ever, and certainly one of the
deepest and darkest. I'd definitely
recommend it, but I warn you, this show is
emotional mustard gas. It will
upset you, and this is as it should be. To
return to Kaji, he's romantically linked
with Katsuragi Misato, one of the main
characters - specifically, he's an old
boyfriend who has come back into her life
under mysterious circumstances. Kaji is a
lot like Dryden, but more devious and
definitely more annoying when he wants to
be. Evangelion is such a complex
series that, having watched it right
through only once, I don't feel qualified
to comment much further; to tell you a lot
more would be to give away elements of
intrigue that you can best appreciate by
watching the series yourself. I went from
rather despising Kaji to really liking
him; I defy you to watch Evangelion
and not respond to the characters this
intensely.

Ascot
What's
this? Yuuichirou as a li'l ol' shirt-tail
tad? Nope, it's Ascot, a character from
CLAMP's shoujo saga Magic Knight
Rayearth. He first appears as a
villain, one of Zagato's henchpersons
(Zagato is an equal opportunities evil
mastermind). Ascot has a special affinity
with monsters; unfortunately, most people
don't like them as much as he does, and in
order to gain protection for them he
agrees to use his powers for Zagato's
purposes. He's eventually turned around by
those sweet girls, the Magic Knights.
Ascot appears again in MKR 2,
looking considerably more grown-up, and it
transpires that he has a little 'thing'
for Ryuuzaki Umi, who is also my favourite
Knight. It's interesting to note that some
people see Umi as similar to Rei, owing to
her hot-headedness, forthright manner and
truckloads of spunk. Oh, and the fact that
she's a B-A-B-E spells babe.

A
face from the past...
Okay,
he's so not anime, but the
resemblance is undeniable! It is, of
course, Norville 'Shaggy' Rogers, as
designed by Iwao Takamoto for
Hanna-Barbera's Scooby-Doo, Where Are
You? It is said by those in the know
that Shaggy was based on Maynard G. Krebs,
a smart-mouthed beatnik character in a
very old and long-forgotten sitcom called
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.
This suggests a very venerable lineage for
such character designs - although,
naturally, I'm not trying to say there's a
direct link! For the record, the original
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? is
pretty good, especially the first season
(1969). It was the later spin-off series,
especially anything with Scrappy-Doo in
it, that were ratbait. And I liked A
Pup Named Scooby-Doo too. Check out
Cartoon
Network.com
for more Scooby stuff.

Just to get even more tangential, has anyone
noticed a few striking resemblances between Shaggy
and Usagi?
- names
sound somewhat similar (shame about the
different 'a' sounds)
- long
skinny arms and legs
- constant,
indiscriminate munchies - although, according to
Casey Kasem, who does his voice, Shaggy is a
vegetarian.
- odd
talking pets
- spend
a lot of time running away from monsters in a
manner that would be considered craven by
professional cowards - oh, hang on, Shaggy is a
professional coward. He has a union card and
everything.
Having
gotten off-topic even by my own lax standards, I
suggest you go to another page!
