Lacour de
Fanel>>Gallery
Where
possible (like if I have a vague memory) I have
given credit to the sources of these pictures. For
more information, see 'Credits and Techy Stuff' in
the Site
Stuff
section.
Visitors are welcome to download any of these
images for whatever purpose they please, on
condition that they do not direct-link to any of
them. If you do this, a big dragon will come and
bite off your arms until you are sorry. Thank you!
Enjoy the eye candy!
>>Cover
of Escaflowne video volume

- okay, I lied, I did scan this one when my
friend Kevin lent me his tapes. A beautiful
juxtaposition of harshness and delicacy, and nice
tulips. Very reminiscent of an Edward
Scissorhands poster showing Edward with a
butterfly poised on the bundle of rusty shears that
passes for his fingers. Tim Burton would love
Folken.
>>A
not especially flattering
picture
of Folken reaching towards you. (This was the
Zaibach Army 'I Want YOU' poster. A lot of young
ladies enlisted and were very
disappointed.)
>>Folken
looking sad about his
claw.
I love this picture. Look at his
mouth!
>>Character
design sketch
of Folken, very useful if you want to draw him
yourself. I believe this and the two following
pictures come from the The
Folken Sanctum,
which rocks.
>>A
vision of Folken in the
afterlife,
happy with his two catgirls. Please don't think too
hard about how that works.
>>Folken
hushing Hitomi
as the dragon stares them out. I guess he's seen
Jurassic Park.
>>Terribly
cute picture
of a teenaged Folken taking care of little Van -
he's just read him something about dragons and you
can tell Van is ready for beddy-bye.
>>Close-up
screencapture
of Folken's face. You can see his eyes are sort of
reddish-brown. What is it with albinos and
Zaibach?
>>Another
screencap,
slightly wider focus. Damn, he's
handsome.
>>Folken
in his makeshift
laboratory
in Asturia, after defecting. Nice
glassware.
>>Another
laboratory
shot,
with Hitomi talking to him.
>>Folken's
moment of
truth.
For every action there is an equal and opposite
reaction... so what happens when you kill a man who
controls Fate?
>>Giving
orders
to the catgirls.
>>Folken
holding Eriya in his
arms
- it's the fate-changing experiment on Allen and
Hitomi.
>>Even
more design
sketches
- I have a thing about these. The pink background
tells me it's from the lovely galleries of
Esca...
'nuff said
>>Shirt
off. Wings out. Oh yeah.
>>Headshot
of fifteen-year-old
Folken.
His cute floppy-haired period.
>>And...
more design
sketches.
There's some duplication here, but some show
certain things better than others, or include bits
that others don't.
>>The
brothers years
ago
- cute little Van dragging on Folken's
arm.
>>Scan
from the Memory of Gaea
artbook
- thanks to Kevin Pezzano of
What
Happened
After?
Mainly showcasing Van's childish cuteness
(which is why you'll find it in his gallery too)
but I love the drawing of the pair of them on the
right.
>>Cover
of a Newtype film
book
showing Van and Folken with wings. You know this
one from the site graphics. Lerv it.
>>The
Japanese
version
of that video cover - it's starker, less pretty bg.
I don't like that boxy typeface, do you?
>>Group
shot including
Folken
- this is one of my favourites, the casting/voice
recording/ whatever one where Dilandau is playing
with Meruru and Folken is standing with his back to
all the silliness. Yeah, like he's never
played some dorky game with Nariya and
Eriya.
>>Another
group shot
- Folken looking very swish in top left-hand
corner. Why is Allen looking at Hitomi like
that?
>>More
groupery!
Folken's on the left, behind Dilandau. Not a very
good picture for Folken, but at least he looks
better than Allen - scary eyebrows.
>>Character
design for movie-style
Folken
- ACK! He's gonna look like this? Oh, he's
so not cute any more! I'll never complain
about series-Folken's hair again... I now know for
certain that it could have been worse. A couple of
people have pointed out that the hair here is very
reminiscent of Jareth, the Goblin King played by
David Bowie in the movie Labyrinth, one of
my all-time favourites. And hey, Jareth has a coat
with the same kind of curly collar as
series-Folken's sorcerous cloak. Now I find myself
wondering if Allen's white owl has a secret
identity...

- Hurrah! The gallery has been augmented by these
pictures kindly scanned by the proprietress of
Erdufylla's
Garden of Anime
Bliss,
one of the nicest people you could hope to
meet.
>>Big,
full-length picture of
Folken
- from his character page in the Memory of
Gaea artbook. This is a fuller version of what
I call the 'I Want YOU' picture, very good from a
fanartist's point of view because it shows the
structure of his clothes so clearly.
>>Folken
whispering in Van's
ear
- this would be just before the needle-jab in the
back of the neck. A jury of other people who have
little brothers would never convict him... although
he does look very villainous. Well, he is a
villain.
>>A
nice large
version
of the ghost-vision picture of Folken, Nariya and
Eriya. Not many people get an afterlife full of
pretty catgirls in tight leather minidresses; lucky
stiff *^.^*
>>Another
one where Folken looks very
wicked
- nifty blue shadows and narrowed eyes. Quite apart
from my Deep Thoughts on the Speculations page, it
could just be that he dresses this way and does his
hair this way out of an innate sense of drama and
the style befitting a villain. I mean, you've got
to look the part. It just wouldn't be the same if
you tried to be a villain in cargo pants and a
teeshirt. Your victims would feel cheated. Right?
Villainy isn't just a craft, it's an
art.
>>Folken
taking off his
jacket,
and looking considerably more muscular than I
usually think of him as being. *Cartman voice*
Beefcake... beeeeefcaaaaaaake! (I'll be quiet
now.)
>>Poor
fifteen-year-old
Folken
looking intensely freaked out by his first good
look at his new arm. Very good hair,
though.
>>15-y-o
Folken with his arm torn
off,
lying in a pool of blood. Whenever I think I'm
having an incredibly bad day, I compare it with
this and realise I'm not, really. (Except the time
the mop bucket at Burger King tried to kill me and
I fell on my knee, the knee with the scar
that I've had since 21 June, 1999, and it started
throbbing and prickling again... chiku... chiku...
chiku... excuse me, I seem to be channelling
Dilandau. Anyway, that time sucked.)
>>Another
lovely depressing
picture
- Folken dead! Have you ever noticed how, no matter
how many zillions of feathers float out of Van and
Folken's wings, they never get that plucked-chicken
look? Apparently that doesn't work any more once
you buy the farm.
>>Folken
behind one of the Fanelian
wolfmen
- well, you can't see much of him, but he's there,
and hey, it's a nice wolfman.
>>With
Hitomi, showing a lot of
wing
- I really do love black wings. (Just for the
record, the first anime guy I had a crush on
was Bad Bird in the Saban dub Samurai Pizza
Cats. I remembered that the other day when I
was trying to think if there's any sort of
precedent for my Folken crush...)
>>About
a second
before
the other picture I have of Folken at the 'moment
of truth.' I think he's still thinking 'Why have I
got a pain?'
>>Another
shot of the fate
experiment
with Eriya.
>>A
very sweet
picture
of Folken sitting in a chair with Nariya and Eriya
hugging his knees, cause he's their 'mental
nourishment.'
>>Looking
sinister
in the Asturian throneroom at Pallas. I would just
like to say that if King Aston had any ancestors
who actually needed a chair with a back that high,
I wouldn't have liked to have met them.
>>Watching
Castel Fort
burn
- that's Allen's joint out in the
swamps.
>>Looking
astonished at a bright
light
- an unusual shot in that he's put his 'good' hand
outside his robes.
>>Standing
behind General
Adelfos
- if I were a grizzled old career soldier like
Adelfos, I would probably get pretty annoyed at
being bossed around by a twenty-five-year-old who
looks like he wears makeup.
>>Manga-style
images
from the back of the Memory of Gaea artbook - that
is, b/w line drawings, not in the style of the
published shounen or shoujo
manga.
>>A
nice face
closeup
- what more need I say?
14.03.2000
- While I was going through my Big Fat
Escaflowne Picture Collection choosing stuff
for a forthcoming Allen shrine, I found another
good Folken picture I'd forgotten about.
>>A
portrait
cropped out of a group picture - so excuse the bits
of Allen and Van visible on the right.
06.04.2001
- God, it's a long time between updates,
ne?
>>I
have a cropped version of this playing-card picture
in the Van galleries, where I said I wished I had
the whole thing because that looked like 'a gnarly
Folken' in the background. I
was right!
Nice Nariya & Eriya, too.
15.06.2001
- two lovely new high-quality pictures of Nariya
& Eriya courtesy of my friend Lizz.
>>Quite
frankly, a
rather saucy
picture.
>>Nariya
and Eriya by moonlight.
30.08.2001
- a mess of lovely new high-res screencaptures,
courtesy of the lovely Nariya.
>>Folken
in sepia-toned catgirl flashback
mode.
This picture makes me wonder very much whether he
really needs to take his shirt off to pop
his wings out, or whether he just does it because
he knows he looks sexier that way.
>>Folken
patiently puts up with having
his good arm chewed on.
>>Folken,
with
wings akimbo,
faces down an irritable Fanelian dragon.
>>Folken
offers
his hand
to Van. Given that it's a pretty spiky
weird-looking hand, I'm not surprised Van doesn't
rush to take it.
>>Folken
in sepia-toned Van flashback
mode.
I bet Van was born wearing a red shirt.
>>Folken
offers
Van his sword
back.
Van stands there looking sulky because he knows he
wouldn't look that good with his shirt
off.
>>15yo
Folken wakes
up post-op
in Zaibach. Aiee, he's so cute!
*ahem*
>>Shading
his eyes against
the light.
>>Folken
comes perilously
close to smiling!
>>But
then he looks like he's remembered something
serious.
>>Hey,
who else wants to play
with his hair?
>>It's
hard to overstate his
gorgeousness.
>>Folken
preparing
the cat twins
for their blood transfusion.
>>Folken
hugging Eriya.
Really, I can't see enough of this.
>>The
greatest
kissy-face
shot
in all of Escaflowne. *drool*
