Brought to you in association with the excellent Lost Escaflowne, this page showcases some really obscure footage that for me, shows Gaddes and his relationship with Allen at their best.

A few words of explanation; the first seven episodes of Tenkuu no Escaflowne presented an unusual problem when they went to air in Japan: they were slightly too long for their time slot. (Later episodes were more accurately timed so the problem didn't recur.) Small cuts were made throughout these episodes to bring the running time down. Nothing really important to the story was sacrificed, but some details that added to characterisation and atmosphere without really moving the plot along had to be nixed.

Sadly, Gaddes material often fell into this category. So the world missed out on him acting gruff but then being a pushover when Van and Hitomi want out of their cell, for instance. Being Mr Supportive, he just had to step aside and let Allen have the screen time. This scene is my favourite of the lot. You can click on these pictures to see larger versions of the screenshots.

On the bridge of Crusade, en route to Pallas after the burning of Castelo Fort, Allen stares moodily out at the passing view, no doubt thinking about what it'll be like to re-encounter a number of people he'd hoped were a feature of his past only.

Gaddes, watching him, makes what I consider an utterly adorable face of quizzical concern. 'You'd better not be moping again!' Honestly, sometimes it's like being mates with Angel...

Apparently Allen can sense people making faces at the back of his head. Reverie broken, he turns to see what Gaddes wants.

These are the faces of two men who truly know and trust each other. I just like that. Even if Allen is handing him the 'I'm fine, really' line. I have no exact translation for any of this dialogue, of course. In the background, Teo has smelled a fart.

Oo - he scents his prey.

'Well hell-LO, Hitomi.'

Seeing a girl who he knows fancies him seems to cheer Allen up right away. Even if she appears to have a receding hairline. (Rare bad drawing!)

I love this. He apologises for his ruse of smooching her in front of Dilandau, saying he may have damaged her reputation. If word about her gets around, she may be considered 'an attractive target.' I think that's what Nanny Ogg calls a 'double intender.' He leans right in to repeat the offence...

... and then doesn't quite *^.^* Liptease!

'As you were, Sergeant.' 'Good to see you as youwere, Boss!'

Hitomi gazes adoringly after Allen...

and so, in his way, does Gaddes. Being a little more usedto Allen, however, he manages not to go kerplunk.

I just love this scene for how well it shows Gaddes and Allen's closeness and understanding. Also Gaddes makes cute faces. It is a shame this scene didn't make the broadcast version, since it lets you see that there's a little more behind Allen's habitual flirting than just being a colossal horndog. When he's feeling insecure, proof that he's attractive bucks him up again. And Gaddes gets that ... which you could argue is why he doesn't get jealous *^.^*
